New Zealand National Eye Centre Microsurgical Skills Course For Beginners
This intensive one-day microsurgical course is particularly useful for non-training registrars and junior research fellows developing basic microsurgical skills in ophthalmic surgery. It will be run under the direct supervision of accredited trainers and tutors, for a maximum of eight trainees.
The course will include a number of key tutorials by experts in the field. Training will be provided on microscope set up, surgical instruments, sterilising guidelines, wound formation, viscoelastics, sutures and suturing (skin and cornea), and general dexterity tasks.
Wet-lab training will be in the purpose built Ophthalmic Microsurgical Suite, equipped with eight surgical microscopes and work benches, plus video demonstration and microscope observation. Dexterity training will be providedon two Eyesi® virtual reality surgical simulators, which are high-end virtual reality simulators for intraocular surgery training. The Eyesi® Surgical courseware is a set of preinstalled courses, which offer training at different levels of difficulty. The Eyesi® simulator provides trainees and educators with objective assessment and detailed skill evaluation.
Morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea will be provided and there will be ample time for group discussion and Q & A. Please advise us of any dietary requirements.
Those who enrol in the course are also able to pursue self-directed (but supervised) use of the EyeSi device for up to 8 hours in the same calendar year at no extra charge.

Other courses
Additional courses will be offered to ophthalmologists who have completed the basic course, and who require training in more advanced surgical techniques, including phacoemulsification techniques, complex wound formation and closure, management of complications and trauma, and more advanced oculoplastic procedures. There is also a 3-4 day training course specifically for new RANZCO registered trainees.
